The Secret Garden and Young Gloucestershire Connection

The Young Gloucestershire (YG) Organisation is a Lottery funded drop in Centre for Young Adults and is dedicated to helping them to get a start in life on leaving school. They offer training, development, advice and support too, whilst providing a haven to attend when help or guidance is needed. Volunteer Mentors or Counsellors, an essential part of the operation at the YG find their roles Enjoyable, Taxing and spiritually rewarding!

It is at this point that I can introduce Charles Perkins, a relatively new Mentor and Counsellor at YG, who is committed to helping young and vulnerable adults. Having been and still is a successful businessman, he feels it is the right time in his life “to give something back” to the Community. He is passionate about helping the current youth of Gloucester and even after a short discussion with him you get a feeling that he generates an infectious enthusiasm.

It was during his induction at the YG that Charles first heard that the YG premises in Southgate street was under threat from the Landlords who , having alternative plans for the building ,wanted to evict YG at the end of their lease. Charles was appalled at this idea and in Charles’ words “ I, immediately saw that this facility could not be lost as its help is so invaluable in keeping so many young people off the streets permanently and away from drug addiction”. At that point he decided to use the successful renovation and launch of the Secret Garden Nursery to persuade the bank that Gloucester City was “going places” and to co fund the purchase of the Southgate street building. Once completed Charles then offered the YG a long term lease for 10 years so that they could the maintain their great work with the certainty of continuity for the future.

Charles is the MD and co-owner of the Secret Garden Nursery in Eastgate Street, which was his first investment venture into Gloucester. The Nursery opened some 6 months ago and since it has flourished into an accomplished Nursery which to date has almost 100 infants and toddlers on its register. The nursery rooms are described as very spacious with an incredible amount of natural light. The regency feature makes this a special place for children to spend their day and the large walled garden is the icing on the cake!

Charles is married to wife Katie and has three children of their own. Katie draws on her past experience as a Social Worker and is delighted to be part of a Nursery team, dedicated to enriching the lives of the children in their care. She is delighted when she can pass on her professional experience to assist Parents and carers with any queries they might have. The link between the Secret Garden and the Young Gloucestershire Centre will become stronger as Charles has a renovation plan for the internal parts of the Centre which will improve the quality of the facilities. It will follow the Nursery ethos by making the area suitable for babies and parents also. Additionally, access to the fabulous garden facilities at the Nursery will be offered to young parents from the YG to enjoy.

Charles is keen to give back to the Community and although he hails from Cheltenham , he has identified the potential for successful development in Gloucester City. For this initiative alone he is a most welcomed addition to our City businesses, particularly when it results in creating and helping worthwhile causes. Perhaps the staffs at the Nursery and at the YG are right when they describe Charles as a local hero?

Dinglewell Junior School Developments

In this edition we catch up with an important development at Dinglwell Junior School. Following the departure of Head Teacher, Lisa Hartford ,there has been a re organisation of the School Staff with Miss Geraldine Brogan being initially appointed Acting Head Teacher before taking over the reins completely in mid- November.

Geraldine has been at Dinglewell School for over 4 years and is looking forward to the many challenges she can expect on a daily basis in her new role. However, she will always be grateful to Lisa Hartford for the opportunities and the guidance she provided as a trusted mentor and friend.

Already Geraldine is relishing the additional responsibilities of this new role and although those responsibilities are obviously very demanding they are also both rewarding and fulfilling.

I took the opportunity to call in on Geraldine early one morning and within minutes began to realise the importance of the role she has now acquired. Scheduled meetings, unscheduled meetings with Parents, Admin and Timetable queries and Greeting the Children – all this took place before 9am!! Geraldine feels that with such a hectic schedule, getting the time management balance is a key factor, whilst never losing sight of the Children’s needs both in the short and the long term.

The seamless transition process from Deputy to Acting Head to Head teacher has been managed most effectively by both Geraldine and the Governing body. In keeping with the schools philosophy of which Geraldine is completely immersed; her personal goal will be to ensure that each child is given the opportunity to develop to their full potential .

Geraldine is keen to point out that there are some very talented pupils at her school in all areas of the curriculum. A prime demonstration of this will take place in the very near future as part of the Christmas Festivities. Many of the Children will have auditioned for the annual Christmas Concert; a very “professional” production, which this year will have a Robin Hood theme. With the full support of Staff, Pupils and Parents, it is should be an undoubted success!

Geraldine is also aware of the contribution being made by her Acting Deputy Head, Tanya Naylor, a long serving member of staff, whose experience and support is invaluable.

It certainly looks like a sound combination which can progressively take the school forward. Therefore, let us as a Community wish Geraldine, Tanya , All the Staff and Pupils every success for the future at Dinglewell Junior School in 2015.

Future Olympic Hopefuls from the Community

Recently, I was fortunate to attend the Primary School Cross Country Championships held at PlockCourt and witnessed outstanding performances from three of the children from our Community.

Finlay Hawkins aged 10 and Sisters Victoria and Katherine Barnsley-Sutton, aged 10 and 9 respectively are all from the Barnwood. Although, they were representing St Mary’s Junior School in Churchdown, Victoria and Katherine live in Armscroft whilst Finlay lives on Barnwood road.

Between them, they won 3 of the 6 races on the programme. Katherine won the year 4 & 5 Girls race, before Victoria and Finlay each won their respective year 6 races.

It was a unique achievement, for each one of them, led their races from Start to Finish. There were over 130 competitors in each race and with wet and muddy conditions to contend with, it must have taken great stamina and determination for each one to achieve their victories. These were tremendous performances for which they should be highly commended. All received medals for their efforts with a certificate and the opportunity to represent Gloucester City Primary Schools at the County Championships in March next year.

We are always looking to promote achievement in the Community and this a particular instance which clearly demonstrates just how talented and gifted our Community children are.

Finally, when questions are being asked about the legacy from last year’s successful Olympics, look at this outstanding example of achievement; surely, these young athletes are ample proof that the Olympic legacy is still alive and running!

Longlevens AFC: A Thriving Community Club

As the football season is again underway we look at the Longlevens Football Club. This progressive club whose 1st Team are the current County league champions were promoted to the Helenic West League for this season and what a start the team has made! Already, as we go to print they are unbeaten League leaders, scoring more goals that any other team by some margin. It is not surprising therefore that Longlevens have 4 Players in the Top goal scoring category. Craig Martin leads the way with 6 goals followed by Sean O’Connor and Ryan Hughes on 5, with Adie Hemming on 4 goals.

Ambitious Manager, James French has astutely improved his squad, by persuading several players from local clubs to join him. James is now happy with his current squad and with lots of competition for a team place; it provides the players with the incentive to maintain their form. Let’s hope that the team’s early form can be maintained throughout the season.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th Adult teams will each be challenged this season, as they too are all playing in higher and stronger leagues. They prepared really well in pre–season training and have a significant number of additional young adult players joining the teams. This situation has generated a healthy optimism about this season and a high degree of expectation that each team will do well!

The Longlevens AFC Youth Section goes from strength to strength, with a further 3 teams joining, this season from the Longlevens Infants Academy. This now established link is allowing the Players to continue football during the transition from Infants to Youth football. In three years the number of teams has increased 2 to 7 and hopefully by 2017 there will be teams representing Longlevens Youth from U12’s to U18’s.

There are 4 teams at U12 competing in Mid Gloucester (Scorpions & Tigers) and the Cheltenham League (Lions & Leopards). The Lions have made a tremendous start and are currently top of the Cheltenham Division 1! New Managers Andy Griffiths and John Bricknell are delighted and are now looking to consolidate their team’s position.

The U12 teams have been training together at Longford lane with as many as 40 players attending the sessions. All the Coaches are involved in improving the players Skills and Stamina whilst Scorpions Coach Lee Martin provides specialist goalkeeping coaching. The photo shows Lee with the U12’s goalkeepers.

Luke Kavanagh and Ed Smylie are current 1st Team Players, who are now into their second season of coaching the U14’s in the Gloucester Youth League and enjoy combining their Plying / Coaching roles at Longlevens.

Finally, Daren Baldwin manages and coachers the U15 team and was the first coach to transfer from the Infants three seasons ago. Daren has established a strong team, who last season were runners up in both the League and Cup to a very successful Lydney team. The team will be tested again this season as they are in a combined U15/U16 division of the Gloucester league.

At U13, Jake Ellway and Jimmy Scurr are experiencing their first roles as Youth Manager / Coach. Jake and Jimmy play for the Longlevens Adult teams and have made an immediate impact with their squad. They think their team is very talented and the players are always prepared to listen and learn. This team could play really well this season.

Finally, to organise pitches for 7 Youth teams and 4 Adult teams over a week end, is an extremely difficult situation; however, this problem could be alleviated, if the sports field on Innesworth lane became available to the Youth teams? The Club has recently, submitted an application to the Gloucester City Council for use of the pitch and pavilion at this location, which has been redundant since the severe flooding of 2007. Although, there would be a huge amount of work required to get the ground fit for matches, the commitment of Committee, Coaches and Players at the club would ensure that the facility would become an asset for the Youth teams. With so much in progress and commitment in abundance, the future is certainly looking very bright for All the teams at LonglevensAFC.

Barnwood Primary School Update

As Barnwood Primary School embarks on another academic year , a strategy is in place to ensure that there is continuity for maintaining the future of the school, whilst maintaining the progressive and spiritual approach for which the school is recognised.

Mrs Anne Davies, the Head teacher has, with the blessing of the Governors decided to take a phased approach to retirement, which involves the measured transfer of her role and responsibilities to ,Mrs Julia Matson. Anne will continue as Headteacher for 3 days a week and Mrs Matson the school’s Deputy Head has taken up the position of Co-Headteacher for 2 days a week.

Julia has been at the school since 2004, initially as a Class teacher before becoming a member of the senior management team. The “partnership” has made a great start with both Anne and Julia very comfortable with this shared role. It is an excellent initiative, as it allows Julia the time to establish herself in the role, before accepting full responsibility and having Anne as a mentor is an added bonus!

The Teaching team also have additional staff members too, they are Mrs Overington who will look after Year 2 and Mrs Paisley , will look after Year 3, whilst becoming part of the Senior Leadership Team also. We wish them both well for the future at Barnwood.

In complying with the Governments directives, there have been two major school developments. One is implementing the the New School Curriculum. Staff worked very hard in preparation for the new curriculum and have created an exciting and engaging prospectus which provides the very best opportunities for all pupils at Barnwood.

The second development is providing Hot School Lunches for the whole Key Stage 1, who are pupils 4 -7 years old. In complying with the Governments mandate, Barnwood has in place a comprehensive range of Lunch menus which offer a range of Healthy and Nutritious meals, provided by ABM Catering.

Three choices are available daily, with a vegetarian option and a salad bar also. It is a credit to the school’s organisation and resources that this status has been achieved so quickly!

Similarly the school is benefitting from a PE & Sport Premium Grant provided to which is being given to all schools to enhance the quality of sport provided for pupils. At Barnwood, £5500 has been allocated for 2013/14 and will be supplemented further over the next two years. The schools objective is to ensure that all pupils have access to high quality PE lessons, alongside greater opportunities for sporting participation, in competitions and sports clubs. To use the grant effectively, the school has a 3 year plan which includes:
*Procuring Extra Sports Kit, Equipment and Resources for PE and Sporting activities& clubs, current and new.
*Subscribing to Local and National Sports Networks will give access to inter school competitions and Improved Staff training opportunities.
*The provision of free transport for “sports” outings and the increased resources for playground games & activities complete the plan. Certainly it will enrich the abilities and ambitions of the Pupils and Staff.

A new school web site is under construction with the objective of enhancing the site and giving quicker and easier access to the elements of the site you wish to review. The end of September was the target completion date.

During October and November, the Singing Development Leader, from Gloucester Cathedral will be training Junior School Pupils in readiness for a Concert at the Cathedral, taking place on the 26th November. An organist and several choristers will accompany the Cathedral’s Singing Leader in the training process. The school is both thrilled and honoured to be chosen to participate in this event, with pupils eagerly awaiting the start of their training for this prestigious event.

Since the start of the new term the School Governors have been particularly busy with fund raising efforts and already a Family Quiz Night and a Ladies Pamper Evening have been organised. In conjunction with the PTA they are also planning the Annual Christmas Fayre which I understand will take place on the 6th December.

Barnwood Church of England Primary School is a valued part of the Community. It has a reputation for creating an Educational, Spiritual and Caring Environment for both Children and Staff. I think that their initiatives and developments at the start of this school year go a long way to demonstrating this!

Finally, let’s wish Anne and Julia every success in their new roles and commend the school Governors for their vision and pro-active initiatives.

Big August Bank Holiday Fundraiser - Live at the Double Gloucester

Weekend starts on Friday with a tribute to the Blues Brothers, then continues all weekend with a massive tribute show on Sunday night, and our annual Cider festival, which this year shall be bigger than ever!

The fundraiser has been arranged by Paula Ryder who's little sister has spent most of her time in hospital. Paula is raising money for the charities who have supported them so that they can help more families. 'I am selling raffle tickets across a number of events to raise money, and will do the draw on the last weekend in August. I have raised £140 to date but want to raise much more, to make a real difference. FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Paulas-Fundraising-Page/683079305108009?ref_type=bookmark

The draw will be taking place on Sunday 24th August. Tickets can be bought online, see my FB Page to get in touch and buy tickets. I will also be selling tickets in the Beachwood Arcade on Friday 22nd August and in the Double Gloucester.'

The charities are:

· Martha Care - Registered Charity 1119249

Martha Care offers help and support for families when their very sick children are admitted to hospital in an emergency or in crisis, supporting them with practical advice and emotional support on the wards when they need it. Martha Care provides a specialist “Martha Care” Family Support Worker to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. Our biggest aim is to provide Martha Care workers to hospitals across the South West so all families in our area receive the support they need to be able to care for their sick child.

· Little Princess Trust - Registered Charity No. 1113172

As a result of treatment for cancer, most children will suffer hair loss as a side effect. Some boys and girls cope remarkably well but for others this can be very upsetting. They provide real-hair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. The wigs are provided free to children. However, the cost to the charity to purchase one wig is on average £350.

Barnwood Medical Centre: “Out with the Old in with the New”

It will be all change at the Barnwood Medical Practice with the relocation of the practice and its patients to the new Aspen Centre in Horton road which opens on 4th August. The Barnwood road site will close on the 1st August after 70 years of caring for patients at this location.

The modern, high–tech and eco-friendly Aspen Centre will meet the needs of the 6000 patients by offering the same caring and ultimately improved levels of service to all the patients from the Barnwood Practice.

Unlike the current site, there is ample car parking available in newly designated and controlled parking areas. An upgraded computer system will provide an immediate response with Patient information, whilst significantly ensuring that Patient confidentiality is always maintained.

As with any major project, the transition from one location to the other is always a very difficult period and the staff have worked diligently to make the transition as seamless as possible. However, Emily Abrahams, the Practice Manager is asking all patients for a little patience at this time and allow the new facility to get fully established. The installation of new equipment, furniture and the new ways of working for both staff and patient’s needs to be coordinated effectively. Inevitably, there will be “teething” troubles, however every effort has been made to alleviate the impact the move could have on certain patients including, the canvassing of the local bus company to provide a more frequent bus stopping point on Horton road for patients using the Aspen Centre.

Let’s wish Emily and everyone at the “new” Barnwood Medical Practice every success in their new environment. For more information about the relocation please call 01452 523362 or check the NHS Websites on www.barnwoodmedicalpractice.nhs.uk and www.aspencentre.co.uk.

Whittington Park Housing Development & Horsbere Drive

There is an obvious amount of development ongoing in Longford lane with new roads and construction sites springing up virtually overnight. The initial roadways and traffic systems accessing Horsebere Drive are already in place, presumably ready for the construction of the proposed new school. With this in mind I took the opportunity to review the Whittington Park Housing development with the Project Manager Martyn Brooks of Barratt Homes. Martyn advises me that there will be a total of 291 dwellings on the site; a mix of 1, 2. 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes. 191 will be constructed by Barratts with the balance built by David Wilson Homes, a sister company of Barratts. Of these about 60 will be homes built for a Housing Association, which will provide the opportunity for shared ownership

This Project will take about four years to complete and sign off with a target date for completion of June 2018. The entrance to the site is established and there will be an ongoing programme of roadwork and sewerage development throughout 2014 and the first phase of 40 houses which has commenced with the laying of the initial foundations in late July and is expected to be completed by June next year. The Sales team are expected to be in place by late December this year or early 2015 at the latest.

As regards the emotive issue of flooding, Martyn has confirmed that considerable design efforts have been made to recognise this issue and as a result the development has been engineered to raise the site to appropriate levels. The surface water is to be drained via an extensive combination of piped sewers, swales, an attenuation pond and an associated outfall channel into Horsebere Brook.

Martyn is keen to foster relationships with the Longlevens Community and has offered to field any questions or concerns we may have about this development. Obviously, within a construction environment it is not advisable to visit him on site, however, he is contactable by personal phone or email, and the details are: 07500 034039 or his email address is: martyn.brooks@barratthomes.co.uk.

It is worth noting that Barratt’s form part of a “Considerate Constructors Scheme” which is a system that is in place, to promote the Contractor‘s presence within the Community, whilst simultaneously enhancing the image of the Contractor.

At this stage the contribution of David Wilson is fairly minimal; however, as the project develops their impact will be monitored also.

I do hope that this has given you an idea of what is happening on the Longford lane site, which will become a huge development in Longlevens, and will inevitably, have an impact on the whole community. We will continue to monitor the development of this project as it progresses.

Hucclecote Community Library Mythical Maze

As the schools enjoy a well- earned break Hucclecote library has launched its Summer Reading Challenge for 2014 - Mythical Maze, which is available to all children aged from 4 to 11 and will run from mid-July through to early September. The challenge is an ideal way for children to enhance their reading skills whilst embarking on a mythical adventure.

Children will a-mazed at what is going down at the library during the summer. Hopefully they will explore their imagination through a range of books available at the library and they will love finding their way around the Mythical Maze. As they read, they will encounter some larger than life characters from myths and legends. Fold Up posters are issued to allow the children to keep track and eventually complete their mazes with stickers from the library.

So why not join in, it’s all free, but hurry as you wouldn’t want to myth out on all the fun!

Also, a series of events is scheduled at the library throughout the holiday which you may want to take advantage of. These include:
  • Friday 8th August: Dragons and Mazes. Check with Library as numbers are limited.
  • Tuesday 12th August : Guide Dogs Event

The Changing Face of the Our Community- Barnwood

The constant reminders that the economy is on the upturn is well supported when you travel along Barnwood Road. Construction, Buildings Works and Civil Engineering projects are emerging rapidly, with an apparent urgency to get these projects completed as soon as possible.

The major re- construction of the Wall Roundabout and its arterial road systems is well underway and work remains on target to be completed by the end of July 2014. This will be followed by the second phase of the works at C&G Roundabout; which is programmed to be completed by the end of October 2014. Work started in earnest in late February 2014 and has moved on quickly, despite the intricate planning involved in co-ordinating the Utility services of Gas, Electricity and Water to complete their individual installations. Traffic Management, is the other critical factor in the project, this is being successfully managed at this stage also!

There has been a conscious effort for work to continue with the minimum of disturbance to vehicle users and local residents. The Contractor Hewlett Construction Ltd and Gloucestershire County Council, with support from Amey have agreed a timetable for traffic management to be fixed for a period between 09:00 and 15:00hours from Monday to Friday; this allows journeys to work and school to move freely without any lane disruption.

Along Barnwood road; the old Barnwood Builders yard is being replaced by a new Morrison’s Shopping Outlet, which will also, incorporate twelve apartments. Behind the barriers that have been erected, there is a hive of activity, operating in a very safety conscious environment. Consequently the project is progressing to plan and the development is due for completion in time for Christmas. It is reassuring that Barnwood Construction is managing this project with the minimum of disturbance to traffic flow and the local residents around the site. Directly across the road at the Wotton Hall Club, the newly appointed “Spice House” Indian Restaurant and Takeaway seems to have appeared overnight? This is quite a coup for this ambitious and progressive club which is never afraid to work in partnership with other business. This alliance is a similar in many ways to the Club’ s agreement with the Post Office in 2010, which has proven a really successful venture. Early indications are that the Spice House food is a very good too!

Moving along the Barnwood road towards the City; the Cross Keys Public House which has been closed for about a year is undergoing a complete make–over. It is to be re-opened as the Queens Fish & Chip Restaurant and Bar. There will be ample parking and the Beer Garden and Children’s Play Area will be retained. Work is well underway and the opening date of Mid July is on target to be met!

At the junction of Barnwood road and Elmbridge road is the Barnwood Medical Practice. This long established Centre, which has been a focal point for the Community, will be closing, with all Patients being transferred to the new Medical Centre in Horton road. My understanding is that the new Centre will be responsible for the patients, not only, from Barnwood road, but from the practices at Heathville road and London road too. It will be interesting to see how this new Centre meets its obligations for this extensive number of patients?

The results of this redevelopment will undoubtedly impact on our Environment, however this will hopefully be for the benefit of our Community and will ultimately provide a range of quality services that our Community quite rightly expects.

Safer Gloucester Presents Paws on Patrol and EVEN MORE…..

Safer Gloucester is back in Gloucester Park with a bigger and better Paws on Patrol fun afternoon in Gloucester Park on Saturday 7th June 2014.

The event, for all the family, “Safer Gloucester Presents Paws on Patrol and EVEN MORE…”, will have demonstrations from the Police dog handlers including Paws on Patrol mascots Ace and Holly, a Dog Agility Demonstration, a Display of Heelwork to Music and a Novelty Dog Show.
This year we are delighted to welcome demonstrations and “have a go” flyball to the city as well the “have a go” dog agility and many other doggy attractions like  grooming, training and healthchecks and we are very pleased that the Dog’s Trust will provide free microchipping for dogs who accompany their owners!
There are also many attractions for the families who are not keen on dogs, including bouncy castles, a roundabout, archery, face painting and Avon and Somerset Police will be bringing along some of their mounted section.
The partners of Safer Gloucester will be demonstrating how they help to keep you safe in Gloucester including Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Gloucestershire Trading Standards will provide information about scams and rogue traders.
For more details of the event visit www.safergloucester.co.uk .
Safer Gloucester invites dog owners to join Paws on Patrol to be the eyes and ears of their community whilst walking their dogs. We have had enormous success to date with Patrollers reporting incidents of crime and anti social behaviour, responding to requests to be on the alert for items like abandoned shopping trolleys, and criminal damage to allotments as well as requests to ‘look out for’ vulnerable or elderly neighbours in the atrocious weather in January and the floods in February, but we do need more members. There will be an opportunity for registering at the event on 7th June and the 1,000th dog to be registered will receive a fantastic prize. There will also be a free prize draw for current members who show their membership cards at the Safer Gloucester marquee. Members receive quarterly newsletters from Safer Gloucester as well as dedicated members newsletters from time to time and information about local crime issues.
Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Chief Inspector Neil Smith said “We are very keen to encourage more residents to sign up to Paws on Patrol. The more members we have, reporting issues in our neighbourhoods gives a strong message to “would be” offenders that it is not just the Police and City Council who are in the area checking on crime and environmental issues but a whole raft of residents who care about where they live. “
Safer Gloucester Presents Paws on Patrol and MORE… will be held in Gloucester Park on Saturday 7th June from 12 noon to 5pm.
For more information and a list of attendees booked to date, check www.safergloucester.co.uk

    Longlevens AFC: Potential Champions?

After a weather induced lay of over two months, our local football teams were are back in action in late February and what better way to resume hostilities than a Local Derby between Longlevens AFC and Gala Wilton. Both Clubs are competing to become County League champions this season. The “derby” was expected to be a thrilling encounter; however, on the day it was the Longlevens team that rose to the occasion and the match resulted in a resounding 6-0 thrashing of their closest rivals. Craig Martin scored the opening goal, before Brother Brad, a Former Gala Youth player and striker, Shaun O’Connor added 2 more goals each, before a late goal from substitute and Player-Manager James French, completed the rout.

Although, there is a back log of fixtures, and therefore, nothing can be taken for granted, Longlevens, have the added incentive of a place in the Hellenic league if they win the league. They are determined to go all the way! Gala Wilton too, will not be giving up the title chase, however, for the “neutrals” in the Community, what a tremendous position for these clubs to be in and what a tremendous advertisement for the standard of football being played in the Longlevens. As we go to press all the Longlevens Men’s teams are enjoying successful seasons too, each team is currently, in the running for promotion either as Champions or as Runners Up.

Further growth of the Youth section continues, with 2 -3 Youth teams being welcomed to Longford lane from the Infants football academy for next season. The Youth section is thriving and with the help of funding from the Gloucester City Council for equipment there is a regular monthly Youth Club Night, which allows both Players and Parents to enjoy a night out in the club house. The Club is developing strong links with the University of Gloucester through several, separate initiatives which include: Student Coaches assisting with the Youth teams; The players from the University Ladies Team having the option to play for Longlevens Ladies at week- ends and the Longlevens Youth Coaches in conjunction with the University will offer a weekly Football “Mash Up “ event probably at the University Campus. Basically, the “Mash Up” encourages boys and girls, in the 14 -16 years age group, to come along and enjoy an organised “kick about”.

This activity is due to commence after Easter once arrangements are finalised. It is proposed to canvas local schools to take part also. For more details contact: Dennis Barnsley 01452 611694 or 07880 784596.

    Longlevens RFC: Off to Twickenham?

At the Longlevens Rugby Club we have a similar story for the 1st XV team are through to the semi- finals of the National Junior Vase; a competition open to the leading teams, representing each County in England. Longlevens became Gloucestershire County Champions back in October last year and since then they have beaten the representative Club teams from Somerset, Cornwall and Wiltshire to become champions and representatives of the South West Area.

On Easter Saturday, April 19th, the Club is to play away at the London Area champions, Battersea in the semi- final. The match is expected to be an epic encounter with both teams playing for the opportunity to play in the final at Twickenham in May. Over 200 supporters will make the journey, all with the same aim: to see their team reach the Vase final!

The squad has a good blend of youth and experience, and is made up predominantly of players who have progressed through the club’s junior ranks to the senior squad. Of these, there are 6 young players who are in the 17 -19 years of age group; including Team Captain Jed Jones, who leads the team, both by example and authority. Jack Beck, Ross Preedy and Oliver Deacon are tremendous young players, whose fathers have also, represented Longlevens RFC. Club President Rich Yorke has sons Mike and Harrison in the team, whilst in Tom Griffiths; they have an England International at U16 level. These players certainly endorse the success of the clubs Youth policy!

Richard Rudge, the 1st team Player Coach, U14 Coach and Club Chairman has been associated with the rugby club for over 30 years, since joining as a junior at 12 years old. Richard is tremendously proud of their achievement, but he too would love his team to play at Twickenham and allow this team to demonstrate just some of its potential. I’m sure we all (footballers included) wish everyone at Longlevens RFC every success in their Semi Final and hope that they achieve their ambition and reach the Twickenham final.

Finally, how fortunate we are as a community, to have such successful sporting teams in Longlevens. With both Football and Rugby Clubs enjoying success, and demonstrating that they can each provide a platform for all budding players to achieve their full potential within the sport of their choice under the Supervision of Qualified and Experienced coaches.

Hucclecote Netball Club: A National League Team!

In line with our aim to promote local clubs in our Community, in this edition we focus on the Hucclecote Ladies Netball Club (HNC). The club is unique in that from its humble beginnings as a village team it has developed into an “elite” Netball club now recognised both regionally and nationally, as a Netball hub for any players with the ambition to succeed at Netball.

The club has been in existence for over 30 years and now boasts 7 senior ladies teams, 5 teams for girls from U12 to U16 and for the younger ones between 7 and 10years old Fun games and friendlies are organised.
The 1st team are in the National Premiere League 1 which involves travelling to play teams in London, Bath, Leeds, Oldham and as far away as Hartlepool! The squad are currently in 4th place in the league and expected to finish there with one game to go! They always “hold their own” in what is a very competitive environment. The squad has a blend of youth and experience, including players who have represented their country at International level. These include: Paige Reed, An England U17 player and Rosie Allinson who is the U21 Shooter for England!

Premier First Team Manager and current Chairperson is Sue Wainwright who helped to start the club back in the early 1980’s, she was instrumental in initiating Hucclecote’s success, by encouraging the club to grow and open its doors to the many talented younger players at the club today. Sue and Coach Chrissie Weaver, have a very talented and well organised squad.

In line with the club’s ambition and continuous improvement policy, Chrissie was recruited before the start of this season on the basis she was best equipped to take the club forward. Her previous role as a Welsh Junior Coach gave her the credentials Hucclecote were looking for! Chrissie is from Cardiff and travels each week to attend Coaching sessions in Cheltenham and matches wherever the location may be, whilst being paid travelling expenses only! Apparently, this is typical of the Netball players and officials at the Hucclecote club. Although local players are involved, there are also several players who travel from Cardiff, Bath, Marlborough, Swindon and Worcester to train and play at HNC.

The HNC Youth policy is certainly paying dividends. Weekly training sessions are held at Cheltenham Ladies College as there are no suitable facilities in Gloucester. All age groups are always well attended, as ambitious players and parents devote both time and expense to ensure that these young players get the best coaching and playing opportunities that are available. The junior section is particularly strong with over a 100 players attending the Coaching sessions every week. That is quite a commitment, but it is a standard expected of netball players with the ambition and potential to become Internationals and that in itself epitomises exactly what the Hucclecote Netball Club can offer!

To put this clubs achievements into perspective, consider this: HNC is recognised as a feeder club and stepping stone to the England National Team! The Super League teams of Bath and Loughborough will gladly send players to Hucclecote to gain experience before they move to Super League and England duty! Despite their success in this sport, HNC have considerable expenses to meet each year and without any current sponsorship, self-funding is essential. Players, Coaches and Officials contribute extensively to meet costs of playing, coaching and providing their own personal kit!

HNC, is undoubtedly, a Community treasure, but, does any business in the Gloucestershire area realise what a hidden gem we have in our midst? Perhaps someone may recognise the sponsorship opportunity on offer by HNC, who are already are established in the Top National Netball league, just one level below the Super League which is now being televised on Sky sports! Surely, it cannot be long before the coverage is extended to National Premier League 1 which of course will include HNC.

Before meeting with Sue, I did not realise the status of the Hucclecote Netball Club in the National Netball arena. However, we should all recognise the important role that this club plays in our Community and the high esteem and recognition placed on the club by the National governing body – England Netball.

Finally, potential sponsors, why not take the plunge and contact Sue Wainwright on: 01452 619106 / 07760 491703 to discuss this sponsorship opportunity!

    Welcome to Longford!

What a welcome awaited Lewis Gordon has he moved into his new home in Longford from South Gloucestershire. Lewis moved to the Longford Lock Barns off Tewkesbury road on the 2nd January, just as the post-Christmas deluge and storms were about to take hold. Though he had been warned of potential flooding in the area, he quickly realised after parking his car, on that first day that there could be a major problem!

His new and concerned neighbours advised him that he should park his car on the higher ground on the opposite side of the Tewkesbury road if he did not want his car to become submerged! Lewis promptly responded, as the courtyard began to fill up rapidly under the torrential rain which the Courtyard’s single grid could not cope with. He was informed that during the famous floods of 2007 the lower two rooms of his accommodation, the “Chauffer’s Cottage”, had been entirely flooded too. Lewis did not hesitate and moved all his furniture and belongings to the upper floors as a matter of urgency, before deciding to stay with friends for a couple of nights. Fortunately for Lewis, remedial work on the flooring had been completed since 2007, which prevented any water entering the property on this occasion. Nearly a week later as the water started to subside, he was able to start a “normal” existence in his new Longford home. Lewis is very philosophical about the whole episode which he has tagged as an enlightening experience. The photo shows Longford Lock Barns about a week after the deluge still with a water depth of over two feet.

For the residents at the top of the Courtyard there was an eerie feeling of deja vu, as they had not forgotten their experience of the 2007 floods. Brenda Halls from the “Wagon House” remembers vividly how her home, although built at a higher level than the Courtyard, had all the downstairs rooms flooded at a cost of thousands and a great deal of disruption! Whilst her insurance company made full compensation, inevitably the insurance premiums have since become astronomical. On this occasion, although the water did not actually rise above the courtyard wall (approx. 6ft in height), Brenda and her husband could not wade through it to get to their car. The alternative route to the road was a trek through a field at the back of a neighbour’s house!

For the residents of Longford Lock Barns this was considered a “near miss”- the risk of flooding is a constant threat for them, and unfortunately, it is one which they all have to live with.

    Flood Defence Success

On a brighter note it was good to see that the flood prevention work completed around Cypress Gardens and Evergreen Walk has had a profound effect. The stream flowing adjacent to Cypress Gardens now has a monitoring mechanism installed which controls the amount of water running through the stream. It is linked to the main reservoir and once a certain water level is reached in the stream, the water entering from the reservoir is significantly reduced to prevent the stream water rising above the banks. It has proved to be a really successful project, for which the Environmental Agency should be highly commended!

There was not a single sand bag in sight on my visit to the area and Patricia Carter a resident of Cypress Gardens, who lives adjacent to Evergreen Walk was delighted with the results. Patricia added that memory of 2007 was now despatched to “history”, for not only have there been tremendous flood defence developments, but the whole quality of life for the local residents had been improved greatly too.

It was also noticeable that a section of fencing, which is about six feet in height, has been erected and strategically placed, adjacent to Evergreen Walk. It appears to provide additional support to the electronically controlled system and forms an integral part of the overall flood defences. Presumably, the barrier would also prevent any egress of water from the stream escaping into the surrounding residences.

When we assess the amount of flooding that has taken place recently in the South West of England, it is worth remembering that we should always be prepared for the unexpected, as both the weather and the seasons become increasingly less predictable.

Hucclecote Rugby Club – Gloucester’s Leading Amateur Rugby Club

As one of Gloucester’s leading amateur rugby clubs Hucclecote RFC have been established for nearly 50 years.

Originally Founded as Hucclecote Old Boys in 1968, by Tony Wainwright, the club was based at the old Hucclecote School and it was not until the school closed in 1987 that it became HRFC.

From those humble beginnings, the club can now offer rugby to three senior teams, several junior teams, and Mini rugby sessions for infants and a Ladies team. There is, also, a thriving Club House, which provides a social hub for players and supporters alike.

The senior 1st team play in the Gloucestershire Premier League and consistently manage to hold their own against high standards of opposition including Stroud Rugby club, the Gordon League club, and current league leaders Newent RFC.

The Club is delighted to have the former Wales B International Andy Phillips as the Senior coach and is proud of the fact that there are about twelve players aged U21 in the Senior squads, these players have developed through the Junior teams and played rugby at Hucclecote all their lives! More good news for the clubs future is the progress of the current U14 squad who have the potential and quality to continue this development process through to the senior teams.

Junior and Mini Rugby is a Thriving Section of the club! Coach Ray Davies, who has responsibility for all the Junior teams, has between 150 -200 junior players regularly attending the coaching sessions, which are held at the club on Sunday mornings from 10am. There are 10 junior sides, with ages ranging from U6 up to U16. Whilst all the teams are regularly involved in friendly matches and travel around Gloucestershire and the Bristol area to play matches. They also play in the prestigious County Cup, a trophy that everyone in the junior teams would love to win for their club. Currently, most of the teams have an abundance of players; however, the recently formed U16 team cannot yet field a full team and are in urgent need of young players. Therefore, anyone in this age group who has played or wants to play rugby should contact Ray directly, preferably by email on raydavis@blueyonder.co.uk or Tel No: 01452 558915.

Unfortunately, the Ladies Rugby team at this time is also struggling for players, and Coach Nikki Gordon is keen to recruit either new or established players to boost the squad. The team play in the Midland league which provides a very good standard of rugby, and training takes place on Wednesday evenings. So if you are 17 years of age or over and are interested please contact Nikki on 07725 910472, I’m sure she will appreciate your interest.

Chairman / Secretary, Mark Howkins has been linked to the club for about 38 years; during this time he was a regular member of the senior teams. Following retirement from playing, he continued to offer his services to the club in a number of different roles as a Committee member before accepting the Chairmanship, whilst combining the extensive duties as Club Secretary. Anyone who is interested in playing or becoming a club member should initially contact: Mark Howkins on 01452 611864.

Tony Wainwright continues his long standing association with the club as Club President, he is always active; if he is not coaching, refereeing or running the line, then he will be cooking up food for the players after training! Tony’s lasting memory, which to date is the pinnacle of the Club’s achievement was reaching the semi -final of the Pilkington Shield in 1994, when the Club, Tony and his team were robbed of a trip to Twickenham by a missed, last minute penalty, which went narrowly wide of the goal posts!

It is on this solid foundation that the club is formed and judging by the enthusiasm generated by Tony, Mark and their fellow committee members the club will continue to progress as a valuable social asset within the Hucclecote Community.
